What do I need (Besides a sewing machine) to start quilting?
I have a beautiful new sewing machine and I would like start quilting. What materials and tools do I need to start?
Start by reading and getting acquainted with the construction of a quilt.
Books by Alex Anderson or Fons & Porter will be excellant choices.

I made my first quilt from a pattern/article in a magazine. This could also be a start - as you look though quilting magazines, the patterns should be rated as: beginner, intermediate and expert.
Start small and make just one block - I have found errors and it is best to find this out before cutting all of them.
Your tools can be basic:
Quilting ruler.
Ceramic quilting pencil.
Good scissors (the rotary cutter and mat can be bought later).
Thin, sharp straight pins.
Quarter-inch presser foot for the sewing machine.
Painter's blue tape or a pad of sticky notes.
The tape or notes can be stuck to the bed of the sewing machine to help you maintain a 1/4 seam.
The ceramic pencil is water erasable.
Quilting notions are on sale this weekend (Feb 13 - 16) at JoAnn Fabrics.
If you want to use a rotary cutter & mat, you may want to also purchase a Klutz Glove to protect your hand and fingers.
