Should I get a serger or replace my ancient sewing machine?
I plan to do some sewing in college, to make some money on the side, but it is OBVIOUS that i need a new machine. i currently have a singer 6233 from like the '80's, and its missing alot of stuff. Should I go the american apparel way and make jersey stuff with a new serger, then save enough to get myself a good sewing machine, or buy a new, fully equiped sewing machine, and save for the serger?
As a sewing machine technician I can tell you that the machine you have (if working correctly) is all the sewing machine you may ever need if you just keep it serviced once a year. (about 50.00) As far as it missing a lot of stuff (attachments ?) your local Singer dealer can help you out. I can't imagine you needing more than the standard zigzag foot. Unless you need a zipper foot or whatever. A serger is a compliment to a sewing machine not a replacement. Though there are many things you can do with it. If I were you I would just have your Singer serviced. Cleaned, oiled and adjusted... then look for a good Serger. Bernina, BabyLock, etc. A new sewing machine even with overlock stitches is never going to cut off excess material like a serger. If you want to make and sell clothing your machine is good enough but get the serger for the finishing touches. Good luck.
