Kenmore sewing machine fabric won't move. Gone through maunual trying to fix problem. difficulties w/tension?
I can't seem to trouble shoot the problem. The material won't move when I start sewing. The feet seem to come up like they are suppose to, needle working fine, but I'm trying to get the pressure foot button where it should be and it isn't solving the problem. I'm sewing a cushion cover for my outside bench using outdoor material, it's not that thick. Kenmore Model 1946 Zig Zag Sewing machine. It's old but has always worked just fine. I may need a bit more help on getting the tension just right. There are numbers for the tension and I'm not sure which number it should be on. Thanks for any help!!
ok, thanks for the help. looks like when I put machine to sew in reverse the feed dog works, but when taken off reverse the feed dogs aren't moving material forward. They do go up and down but not forward at the same time. Help, please??
I have a Kenmore 1946 and I have had it since new in 1978. I once recovered the bench of my pickup with upholstery fabric and used this machine. It didn't want to move the fabric either. If you have never looked inside, it is a belt-drive machine and doesn't have the torque of a gear-drive machine. Like the others have said, make sure it is cleaned and oiled for it's best performance. Make sure that you are using a new needle of the correct size - probably a size 16 jeans needle. Take a couple layers of scrap and sew a straight seem down the middle with differend colored thread top and bottom. Look at the stitching. If the bobbin thread shows on the top, turn your tension dial to a higher number. If the top thread shows on the bottom, turn your tension number to a lower number. If you turn the dial all the way one direction and it doesn't solve the problem, you might need to adjust the little screw in the bobbin case remember "righty-tighty, lefty-loosey" and make 1/4 turns at a time. You might also need to loosen the pressure foot pressure. The small push in button on top of the machine straight above the needle tightens it, push down on the outer ring to release it, then re adjust to a lower number.
BTW, You DID make sure that you didn't accidently lower the feed dogs, didn't you? Hope this helps!
